The Pros and Cons of the Different Types of HDTV Televisions
22 June 2009The market for HDTV televisions has continued to expand at blazing speed. There are many competing technologies in this market. Each one of them has its own distinctive traits. Some of them have higher contrast while others are known for their long life spans. While there are in fact more than six HDTV technologies in the market including LED and LCoS, the ones that are often in stores are LCD, Plasma and DLP. Each of the three is unique in some way but their purpose remains the same. To a considerable amount of people Plasma is synonymous to HDTV. They were one of the first technologies that entered the world of high definition. During their first years in the market they captured a decent share of the market. In the beginning, Plasma screens were very fragile and could work optimally for only a few short years. These televisions have a contrast ratio that can only be matched by sets using CRT technology. Not to mention that they are not as prone to ghosting and other problems such as stuck pixels. The most popular technology is now LCD. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These sets can display outstanding and vibrant colors. They spend less energy than Plasma sets and do not have reflection problems. If you decide on one of these sets you have to be sure the model is top quality since the performance of these sets varies a lot between models and brands. On good sets however, colors can be mesmerizing and very rich. The other technology worth mentioning is DLP. As of now most of the time DLP is associated with rear projectors. While their image quality is lower if you compare them to Plasmas and LCDs they are very budget friendly to those that are looking to create a home movie theater or just prefer a rear projector. The contrast is not as good but, if you compare the size vs money they may still be an option to consider. There are more HDTV screen classes available on the market. However, these are the technologies that dominate the market. Sure there are more like LCoS but they have not had the impact that these have.
